Hail-Resistant Windows for the Front Range: Protecting Your Colorado Home

If you have lived along the Front Range for more than a summer or two, you have a hail story. Maybe it is the storm that turned your car into a golf ball. Maybe it is the afternoon when baseball-sized stones punched holes through your neighbor’s siding.
Colorado Springs sits in one of the most hail-prone regions in the United States. Our warm, moist air from the south collides with cold air dropping off the mountains, creating severe thunderstorms that produce hail from April through September. Some years are worse than others, but the threat is constant.
Your windows are among the most vulnerable parts of your home during a hailstorm. Here is what you need to know about protecting them.
Why Standard Windows Fail in Colorado Hail
Standard residential glass, even double-pane, is not designed to handle impact from ice falling at 60+ miles per hour. Here is what typically happens during a significant hailstorm.
Small hail (pea to marble size) usually does not break modern double-pane windows, but repeated impacts can weaken the glass and damage seals over time. You might not see the damage immediately, but the window’s performance degrades.
Medium hail (quarter to golf ball size) can crack the exterior pane of standard double-pane windows. Once the outer pane is compromised, the insulating gas escapes, and the window loses its energy efficiency. You will see fogging between the panes after the seal fails.
Large hail (golf ball and above) can shatter both panes of standard windows, leaving your home exposed to rain, wind, and debris. This is when window damage becomes an emergency.
Impact-Resistant Glass Options
If you are replacing windows in a hail-prone area (which is essentially anywhere on the Front Range), you have several impact-resistant options to consider.
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is heat-treated to be four times stronger than standard (annealed) glass. It handles impact better and, when it does break, shatters into small, relatively safe granules instead of dangerous shards.
Tempered glass is already required by code in certain applications (like doors and windows near floor level). Upgrading all your windows to tempered glass adds meaningful hail resistance at a moderate cost increase.
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is the premium choice for hail protection. It consists of two layers of glass bonded to a tough plastic interlayer (PVB or SGP). When laminated glass is hit by hail, it may crack, but the pieces stay bonded to the interlayer. The window remains intact and continues to protect your home from weather and intrusion.
This is the same technology used in car windshields, which is why your windshield cracks but does not fall apart when hit by a rock on I-25.
For hail protection, laminated glass is superior to tempered glass because it keeps the opening sealed even after damage. A cracked laminated window still keeps rain and wind out until you can schedule a replacement.
Impact-Rated Windows
Some manufacturers offer windows specifically tested and rated for impact resistance. These windows use a combination of laminated glass, reinforced frames, and specialized hardware to withstand high-velocity impacts.
Impact-rated windows are more expensive, but they offer the highest level of protection available. For homes in the most hail-exposed locations or for homeowners who want maximum protection, they are worth the investment.
Which Windows Need the Most Protection?
If budget is a factor (and it usually is), here is how to prioritize hail-resistant upgrades.
West-facing and south-facing windows take the most hail damage in Colorado Springs. Most of our severe thunderstorms approach from the west or southwest, driving hail at an angle that directly impacts these exposures.
Large picture windows and patio doors have the most surface area exposed to hail. A single hail strike through a large picture window is a costly repair and an immediate security concern.
Upper-story windows are more exposed because they lack the partial protection that roof overhangs and landscaping provide to ground-level windows.
Windows without overhangs or covered porches take direct hits without any buffer. Even modest roof overhangs provide some deflection for smaller hailstones.
Insurance Considerations
Here is where hail-resistant windows can help pay for themselves.
Colorado’s insurance market has been hit hard by hail claims in recent years. Premiums have risen, deductibles have increased (especially wind/hail deductibles), and some carriers have reduced coverage in high-risk areas.
Many insurance companies now offer premium discounts for homes with impact-resistant features, including windows and doors. The discount varies by carrier, but it can be meaningful over the life of the windows.
Additionally, impact-resistant windows reduce the likelihood that you will need to file a hail damage claim. Fewer claims mean a cleaner claims history, which helps keep your premiums in check over time.
Before your next policy renewal, ask your insurance agent what discounts are available for impact-resistant windows. Then factor that savings into your window replacement budget.
What to Do After Hail Damage
If your windows have been damaged by hail, here is what we recommend.
Document the damage immediately. Photograph every damaged window from inside and outside. Note the date, time, and severity of the storm.
Do not delay. A cracked or broken window exposes your home to weather damage, insects, and security risks. Board up or cover severely damaged windows with plywood or heavy plastic as a temporary measure.
Contact your insurance company. File a claim promptly. Most Colorado homeowners’ policies cover hail damage to windows, though your deductible applies.
Call a reputable window company. At Dream Windows, we respond quickly after hailstorms because we know time matters. We assess the damage, work with your insurance adjuster, and get your home sealed up as fast as possible.
Consider upgrading when you replace. If hail damaged your standard windows, this is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to impact-resistant glass. You are already replacing the windows, and the incremental cost of better glass is much less than the full replacement cost.
Building Resilience Into Your Home
Living on the Front Range means accepting that hail is part of the deal. But accepting the risk does not mean accepting the damage. Modern impact-resistant windows give you a fighting chance against Colorado’s most destructive summer storms.
When it is time to replace your windows, talk to our team about the right level of hail protection for your home. We consider your home’s exposure, your budget, your insurance situation, and your peace of mind. If insurance only covers part of the upgrade, our flexible financing options can bridge the gap so you can step up to impact-rated glass without delay.
We serve Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Monument, Woodland Park, and communities across the Front Range.
