7 Signs Your Windows Are Costing You Money This Winter

Is your heating bill too high? These 7 warning signs mean your windows are letting cold air in and warm air out. Here is what to look for.
Colorado Springs winters are no joke. When the temperature drops below zero and the wind picks up along the Front Range, your windows become the thin line between a warm home and an expensive heating bill.
After more than a decade of inspecting and replacing windows across Colorado Springs, I have seen every type of window problem out there. Here are the seven signs that your windows are costing you real money this winter.
1. Condensation or Fog Between the Panes
This is the most obvious sign of a window that has failed. If you see moisture, fog, or a milky haze between the two panes of a double-pane window, the seal is broken.
When a seal fails, the insulating gas (usually argon) that was trapped between the panes leaks out and is replaced by regular air. Moisture gets in and condenses when temperatures change.
A window with a failed seal has lost a significant portion of its insulating value. It is essentially performing like a single-pane window with an air gap. In a Colorado Springs winter, that is a lot of wasted heat going right through the glass.
What to do: Seal failure is not repairable. The window (or at minimum the insulated glass unit) needs to be replaced.
2. Drafts Near Closed Windows
This is the one most people notice first. You are sitting near a window, it is closed and locked, and you feel cold air moving.
Here is a simple test: on a cold day, hold a lit candle or stick of incense near the edges of your closed windows. Move slowly along the bottom, sides, and top. If the flame flickers or the smoke blows sideways, you have air infiltration.
The most common draft locations are:
- Bottom corners where the sash meets the frame
- The meeting rail where upper and lower sashes overlap
- Around the frame where it meets the wall (poor installation or settled caulking)
What to do: Minor drafts from worn weatherstripping can sometimes be fixed with new weatherstripping. But if the window frames themselves are warped, cracked, or poorly sealed, replacement is the better investment.
3. Your Heating Bill Keeps Climbing
If your energy costs have been creeping up year over year and you have not made other changes (new thermostat, different heating habits, rate increases aside), your windows could be the problem.
Old or failing windows can account for 25 to 30 percent of your home’s heating energy loss. In a Colorado Springs home where winter heating can cost $200 to $300 per month, that is $50 to $90 per month going straight through your windows.
What to do: Compare your bills year over year and adjust for rate changes. If you are using more energy for the same comfort level, our energy-efficient window upgrades team can identify where the losses are occurring, and you can offset costs with our flexible financing options and the 2026 window replacement tax credits.
4. Visible Damage to Frames and Sashes
Take a close look at your window frames, especially on south-facing and west-facing windows that get the most sun and weather exposure.
Common signs of frame deterioration:
- Wood rot (soft spots, peeling paint, discoloration)
- Cracked or brittle vinyl (common with older vinyl windows at altitude)
- Warped frames that prevent proper closing and sealing
- Peeling or bubbling paint on wood frames
- Aluminum corrosion (pitting, white powder, oxidation)
At 6,300 feet, our intense UV radiation and dry air accelerate frame deterioration compared to lower-elevation homes. A window frame that might last 25 years at sea level may show serious wear at 15 to 18 years here.
What to do: Damaged frames compromise both the seal and the structural integrity of the window. If the damage is beyond cosmetic, replacement is the right call.
5. Difficulty Opening, Closing, or Locking
Windows that stick, jam, will not stay open, or refuse to lock properly are more than an inconvenience. They are a sign that the frames have shifted, the hardware is failing, or the frame material has warped.
A window that does not close and lock completely leaves gaps in the seal. Even small gaps allow significant air infiltration, especially when the wind is blowing (which in Colorado Springs, it often is).
Beyond energy loss, windows that will not lock are a security concern. And windows that will not open are a fire safety hazard, especially in bedrooms.
What to do: Sometimes hardware replacement can solve the problem. But if the frame itself is warped or shifted, the window needs to be replaced.
6. Ice Buildup on Interior Glass
If you are seeing frost or ice forming on the inside surface of your windows during cold snaps, that is a serious performance issue. It means the interior glass surface is getting cold enough for moisture in your indoor air to freeze on contact.
This only happens when the window’s insulation value is extremely poor, either because it is single-pane glass, the sealed unit has failed, or there is no Low-E coating to keep the interior glass surface warm.
In Colorado Springs, where nighttime temperatures can drop below zero for stretches in December and January, interior icing is a clear sign that your windows are not up to the job.
What to do: Windows that ice on the interior need to be replaced with properly insulated units. Modern double or triple-pane windows with Low-E coatings keep the interior glass surface warm enough to prevent condensation and icing.
7. Rooms That Are Always Cold (No Matter What You Do)
You know the room. You crank the heat, maybe even add a space heater, and it still feels cold. You put on a sweater and accept it.
If certain rooms in your home are consistently colder than others, and those rooms happen to have older or more windows, the connection is clear. Poor-performing windows create cold spots, downdrafts, and convective loops that make a room feel much colder than the thermostat says it is.
This is especially common in:
- Sunrooms and rooms with large window areas
- Rooms with north-facing windows
- Bedrooms over uninsulated garages (compounded by poor windows)
- Older additions where windows may be lower quality than the original home
What to do: Replacing the windows in problem rooms can be transformative. Many of our customers tell us they can finally use rooms they had essentially written off during winter.
How Michael’s Team Can Help
If you recognized one or more of these signs in your home, you are not alone. Most of the homes we work on in Colorado Springs have at least two or three of these issues.
The good news is that modern replacement windows solve all of them. A properly installed energy-efficient window with Low-E coatings, gas fills, and altitude-rated seals will:
- Eliminate drafts and air infiltration
- Keep interior glass surfaces warm
- Cut heating costs by 25 to 40 percent
- Make every room in your home comfortable
We offer free in-home assessments where we inspect your windows, identify the biggest problems, and show you exactly what replacement would look like for your home and budget.
You do not have to replace everything at once. Start with the worst offenders, the rooms that bother you most, and upgrade from there.
