Compare vinyl, fiberglass, and wood window materials for Colorado homes. Honest pros and cons from a certified installer with 10+ years experience.

Choosing the right material for your replacement windows is one of the most important decisions you will make during a window project. The material affects everything: how long your windows last, how they perform in our climate, how much maintenance they need, and what they cost.

I have installed thousands of windows in every material across Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas. Here is my honest assessment of each option based on what I have seen perform best (and worst) at 6,300 feet.

Vinyl Windows

Vinyl is the most popular window material in America, and for good reason. It is affordable, low-maintenance, and performs well in most climates. But “most climates” and “Colorado” are not always the same thing.

The Good

  • Lowest cost of any window material, making it accessible for budget-conscious homeowners
  • Zero maintenance required. No painting, staining, or sealing
  • Good insulation since vinyl itself is a poor heat conductor
  • Wide availability in standard sizes and styles
  • Does not rot, rust, or corrode

The Concerns in Colorado

  • UV degradation is the biggest issue. At our altitude, intense UV radiation breaks down vinyl over time, causing it to become brittle, discolor, and eventually crack. Cheaper vinyl windows are especially vulnerable.
  • Temperature expansion causes vinyl to expand and contract more than other materials. In Colorado Springs, where we can see a 50-degree temperature swing in a single day, this cycling can loosen seals over time.
  • Limited color options since vinyl is difficult to paint (and painting it can void the warranty)
  • Can look cheap on higher-end homes, particularly with flat profiles and visible welded corners

My Take on Vinyl

Vinyl windows are a solid choice for budget-focused projects, especially on north and east-facing elevations where UV exposure is lower. I recommend sticking with premium vinyl from reputable manufacturers and avoiding the cheapest options. A $400 vinyl window from a quality brand will outperform a $250 vinyl window from a box store every time.

Expected lifespan in Colorado Springs: 15 to 20 years for quality vinyl, 10 to 15 years for budget options.

Fiberglass Windows

Fiberglass is the premium alternative to vinyl, and it performs exceptionally well in demanding climates like ours.

The Good

  • Strongest frame material available, up to eight times stronger than vinyl
  • Minimal thermal expansion since fiberglass expands at nearly the same rate as glass itself. This means the seal between the glass and frame stays intact longer.
  • Excellent UV resistance that holds up to Colorado’s intense sun without degrading
  • Can be painted and repainted to match your home’s changing aesthetics
  • Slim profiles that maximize glass area and views
  • Outstanding durability with a lifespan that often exceeds the glass itself

The Concerns

  • Higher cost than vinyl, typically 20 to 40 percent more
  • Fewer manufacturers compared to vinyl, which can mean longer lead times
  • Not as warm to the touch as wood, which matters to some homeowners for interior aesthetics

My Take on Fiberglass

If your budget allows it, fiberglass is one of the best materials you can put in a Colorado home. The combination of strength, UV resistance, and minimal expansion makes it ideal for our conditions. I have seen 20-year-old fiberglass windows that still look and perform like new.

Expected lifespan in Colorado Springs: 25 to 35 years.

Wood Windows

Wood is the traditional choice and still the standard for beauty and warmth. There is nothing quite like a real wood window on the interior of a home.

The Good

  • Unmatched aesthetics with natural warmth and character
  • Excellent natural insulation since wood is one of the best natural insulators
  • Fully customizable with unlimited paint and stain options
  • Adds value to higher-end homes, especially in historic neighborhoods like Broadmoor and Old North End
  • Can be repaired rather than replaced if damage is localized

The Concerns in Colorado

  • Maintenance intensive in our climate. Colorado’s dry air and intense UV require regular painting or staining (every 3 to 5 years for exterior surfaces)
  • Moisture and rot risk even in our dry climate. Snow melt, condensation, and occasional heavy rain can cause rot if the finish is compromised.
  • Cost is the highest of any material
  • UV damage to exposed wood surfaces is accelerated at altitude

My Take on Wood

I love wood windows for the right application. In a historic home where character matters, or in a high-end custom build where aesthetics are the priority, wood is the right choice. But I always have an honest conversation with homeowners about the maintenance commitment. If you are not willing to inspect and refinish your windows every few years, wood will disappoint you in Colorado.

For customers who want the wood look without the maintenance, I steer them toward clad wood options (wood interior, aluminum or fiberglass exterior cladding) or composite alternatives.

Expected lifespan in Colorado Springs: 20 to 30+ years with proper maintenance. Significantly less without it.

Composite (Fibrex) Windows

This is Andersen’s proprietary material, and as an Andersen Certified installer, it is the material I recommend most often. I will tell you why.

What Is Fibrex?

Fibrex is a composite material made from reclaimed wood fiber (from Andersen’s own manufacturing) and thermoplastic polymer. It combines the best properties of wood and vinyl into something that outperforms both.

The Good

  • Twice as strong as vinyl with superior structural integrity
  • Excellent thermal performance thanks to the wood fiber content
  • Minimal expansion and contraction which keeps seals intact at altitude
  • Can be painted (factory or field-applied)
  • Does not rot, warp, or corrode
  • Environmentally responsible since it uses reclaimed materials
  • Low maintenance with no painting or staining required (though you can paint it)

The Concerns

  • Only available from Andersen so you are limited to their product lines
  • Mid-to-high price point though typically less than pure fiberglass
  • Limited to Andersen’s style options (which are extensive, but not unlimited)

My Take on Fibrex

After installing Fibrex windows for years in Colorado Springs, I can tell you they hold up better than anything else in our climate. The combination of strength, thermal stability, and UV resistance is exactly what Colorado homes need. And the fact that they require essentially zero maintenance means our customers are still happy with them years after installation.

Expected lifespan in Colorado Springs: 25 to 35+ years.

What I Recommend for Most Colorado Springs Homes

For the majority of homeowners I work with, Fibrex composite offers the best balance of performance, longevity, and value for our specific conditions. It handles everything Colorado throws at it without the maintenance burden of wood or the UV vulnerability of vinyl.

For budget-focused projects, premium vinyl is a perfectly respectable choice that will serve you well for 15 to 20 years. Just avoid the cheapest options.

For high-end historic homes and custom builds, wood interiors with clad exteriors deliver the beauty you want with protection against our climate.

help Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best window material for Colorado's climate? expand_more
Fiberglass and composite materials like Andersen's Fibrex perform best in Colorado's extreme conditions. They resist UV degradation, handle temperature swings without warping, and maintain their seal integrity at altitude. Vinyl is a solid budget option, while wood offers the best aesthetics but requires more maintenance.
How long do vinyl windows last in Colorado? expand_more
Quality vinyl windows typically last 15 to 20 years in Colorado Springs, though south and west-facing windows with heavy UV exposure may show degradation sooner. Lower-quality vinyl can become brittle and crack within 10 to 15 years at our altitude.
What is Fibrex and why does Dream Windows recommend it? expand_more
Fibrex is Andersen's proprietary composite material made from reclaimed wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It is twice as strong as vinyl, does not rot or corrode, expands and contracts less with temperature changes, and can be painted. We recommend it because it outperforms other materials in Colorado's demanding climate.
Are wood windows worth the extra cost in Colorado? expand_more
Wood windows offer unmatched beauty and excellent insulation, but they require consistent maintenance in Colorado's dry, sunny climate. They are worth it for homeowners who value aesthetics and are committed to regular upkeep. For most Colorado Springs homeowners, a composite or fiberglass option gives you similar performance with much less maintenance.
