What to Expect During Window Installation Day: A Homeowner's Guide

Wondering what happens on window installation day? Here is a step-by-step look at the process from a Colorado Springs Andersen Certified installer.
You have chosen your windows, signed off on the design, and your installation date is on the calendar. Now what?
Knowing what to expect on installation day helps everything go smoothly. After thousands of window installations across Colorado Springs and the Front Range, here is exactly how the day unfolds when Dream Windows shows up at your door.
Before Installation Day: How to Prepare
A little preparation goes a long way. Here is what we ask homeowners to do before our crew arrives.
Clear the work area. Move furniture, lamps, plants, and decorations at least three feet away from every window being replaced. This gives our crew room to work safely and protects your belongings.
Remove window treatments. Take down curtains, blinds, and shades from the windows being replaced. You can rehang them after installation, though you may need to adjust the hardware if the new window frame is a different depth.
Protect valuables. Even with drop cloths and careful work, installation creates some dust. Move delicate items, electronics, and anything you do not want exposed to construction dust out of the immediate area.
Clear exterior access. If you have planters, patio furniture, or landscaping close to the exterior side of your windows, move them back to give our crew room to work from the outside.
Plan for pets. Keep dogs, cats, and other pets in a room away from the installation activity. Open windows and unfamiliar workers can be stressful for animals, and we want everyone safe and comfortable.
Plan for kids. Same idea. A room away from the active work zone is the safest and most comfortable option for young children during installation.
Morning: Arrival and Setup
Our crew typically arrives between 7:30 and 8:30 AM. We know that is early, but starting early means we can finish your project in one day for most homes.
Here is what happens first.
Introductions and walkthrough. The crew lead introduces the team and walks through your home with you. We confirm which windows are being replaced, review any special instructions, and answer your last-minute questions.
Vehicle and material staging. We position our vehicle and stage your new windows near the entry point. Every window is labeled and organized by room to keep the process efficient.
Interior protection. We lay drop cloths around every window being replaced. We also put down floor runners along the paths our crew will use to move through your home. Your floors, carpets, and furniture stay protected throughout the day.
The Installation Process: Room by Room
We work through your home one window at a time. Here is what happens at each window.
Step 1: Remove the Old Window
The crew carefully removes the old window sash, frame components, and any deteriorated trim. We work cleanly to minimize dust and debris. Everything we remove goes straight out to our cleanup area.
Step 2: Prepare the Opening
With the old window out, we inspect the rough opening. We check for any moisture damage, rot, or structural issues in the framing. If we find minor issues, we repair them on the spot. If we find something more significant, we stop and discuss it with you before proceeding.
We clean the opening thoroughly and apply flashing tape to create a watertight barrier. This is a critical step that protects your home from moisture intrusion for decades.
Step 3: Set the New Window
Your new window is carefully positioned in the opening. We shim it to ensure it is perfectly level, plumb, and square. Even a small misalignment can cause operation issues and compromise the seal, so we take our time here.
Step 4: Secure and Seal
Once the window is perfectly positioned, we fasten it securely to the framing. Then we apply insulation around the perimeter to fill any gaps between the window frame and the rough opening. We seal the exterior with caulk to create a weathertight finish.
Step 5: Test and Adjust
We open and close every operable sash multiple times to make sure it operates smoothly. We check the locks, test the tilt-in function (where applicable), and verify that the seal compresses properly when the window is closed and locked.
Step 6: Finish the Interior
We apply interior trim and any finish work needed to complete the installation. The goal is a clean, finished look that blends naturally with your existing interior.
Then we move to the next window and repeat the process.
How Long It Takes
Every project is different, but here are general timelines based on our experience.
- Single window: 30 to 60 minutes
- 5 to 8 windows: Most of one day (6 to 8 hours)
- 10 to 15 windows: A full day, occasionally stretching to early the following day
- Whole-home replacement (15+ windows): One to two days
These timelines assume standard installations without structural modifications. If we are changing the size of an opening, adding a window where one did not exist, or doing full-frame replacement in older construction, each window takes longer.
Afternoon: Cleanup and Walkthrough
As we finish the last window, the cleanup process begins. Here is what we do.
Remove all debris. Every piece of the old windows, all packaging material, and any construction waste goes into our cleanup vehicle. We do not leave anything behind.
Vacuum and sweep. We vacuum the work areas and sweep any dust or debris from your floors. Your home should look cleaner than when we started (minus the old windows).
Exterior cleanup. We pick up any materials, caulk tubes, or scraps from around the outside of your home. Landscaping and plantings are restored to their original positions if we moved them.
Final walkthrough. This is the most important part of the day. The crew lead walks through every installed window with you. We demonstrate how each window operates, show you the tilt-in cleaning features, explain the warranty, and answer every question you have.
We want you to love your new windows before we leave. If anything is not right, we address it on the spot.
Common Questions and Concerns
“Will it be cold inside?” We only have one opening exposed at a time, and for a short period. In winter installations, we work quickly and strategically to minimize heat loss. Your home stays comfortable throughout the process.
“What about rain or snow?” We monitor weather forecasts closely. Light rain or snow does not stop us, but we will reschedule if conditions could compromise the installation quality or your home’s interior. Your home is never at risk.
“Can I still use my kitchen/bathroom?” Yes. We work room by room, so the rest of your home functions normally. If we are working in the kitchen, use the bathroom. If we are in the bedroom, use the kitchen. We coordinate with you throughout the day.
“What if you find something wrong behind the old window?” It happens occasionally, especially in older Colorado Springs homes. Moisture damage, deteriorated framing, or previous poor installation work are things we sometimes discover. We discuss the issue with you, explain the options, and agree on a path forward before continuing.
